Elms Court, originally built in 1837 for Katherine and Eliza Evans, combined Federal and Greek Revival features. When built it was a two-story center hall house with a narrow two story columned central portico. Two phases of remodeling in the 1850’s removed the portico, added the cast iron grill work , two side wings and extended the house in the rear. The brick stable and carriage house building with its distinctive Dutch Gable façade and the three-room brick dependency predate the civil war. Three cisterns and the remains of the pre-civil war residential gas works are visible in the back yard. Interior features include deeply recessed plaster ceiling centerpieces, a curved cantilevered stair, a large punkah in the dining room and gasoliers installed in the 1850’s.
Elms Court has been a popular backdrop for the entertainment industry, hosting Hollywood elites such as Morgan Freeman and Elizabeth Taylor
