Spaniard Manuel Texada built the house known as Texada c. 1798 in a neighborhood identified as “Spanish Town.” Texada was the city’s first brick house, the most highly valued building in early tax rolls, and is Mississippi’s first capitol building. In the early 1800s some of the commercial businesses at Texada included a tavern, a dancing academy, the opportunity to see a live elephant, and a wax museum. The first floor of this family home features exposed beam ceilings and is furnished with early American and English antiques. George and Margaret Moss initiated its restoration in 1964 and it remains in their family’s ownership.
