Gloucester, built in 1803, was the first federal style mansion in the Mississippi Territory, and was owned by the first Territorial Governor, Winthrop Sargent. Gloucester was also the site of the murder of the Governor’s son during the War Between the States. The main house is 9,000 square feet, with columns nine feet in circumference, and features the oldest marble fireplace mantelpiece in the Mississippi Territory. The grounds include two outbuildings to view, a summer kitchen and a billiard room. The home sits on five and a half park-like acres with ancient trees and features formal gardens and follies where you’re invited to dawdle with a refreshment.
